Tonto National Forest officials announced today that the forest is joining with other agencies included under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) in hosting a “no fee” day, September 25, in observance of National Public Lands Day.

No Tonto Passes will be required September 25, except at the following concessionaire-operated campgrounds: Ponderosa Campground, Sharp Creek Campground, Christopher Creek Campground, Christopher Creek Group Campground, Upper Tonto Campground, Houston Mesa Campground and Houston Mesa Horse Campground.

During all other times, the Tonto Pass is required at more than 50 recreation sites including Salt River and Verde River locations, boat launch ramps, swimming areas, and campgrounds.

A list of Tonto Pass vendor locations is available at the Tonto National Forest website,, or call the Tonto National Forest at 602-225-5200.

The final no fee day of the year will be November 11, 2010 in honor of Veterans Day.

National Public Lands Day is the largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the forests, parks and other public lands visitors enjoy throughout the year. During that day, volunteers build trails and bridges, remove trash and invasive plants, plant trees and restore water resources.
