This week, a woman wanted to know what kind of motor home she should buy that would let her drive the highways and surf the Internet simultaneously. She said she’s never vacationed in one, but had always planned to buy one some day. She decided now is probably the right time.

My advice to her? Don’t buy one.

Let’s put aside for now the obvious questions of whether our writer has considered buying a used model or a less-pricey travel trailer. The issue isn’t whether the RV has Internet access. That’s the easy part. My question is, why would you invest such a large sum without first learning whether RV-ing is a lifestyle you love?

The simple solution is to rent a motor home and try it out. First for a long weekend; then perhaps a week or more. It won’t take long to learn whether you’re going to be ready for a long-term commitment.

It’s true that most people would rather buy than rent, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of shopping, especially when there’s a good salesman involved.

But there are times when renting is simply the best idea. The top two times to think about renting are, first, when you need to try something out, as with our wannabe RVer. And, second, when you need something for only a short time.
