DUNEDIN FLORIDA — Hundreds of Dunedin residents recently fought to keep RV camping out of Honeymoon Island State Park — and won. But with all the hubbub, the city wants to make sure it doesn’t come off as unfriendly to RV users.

To that end, officials will meet next week to explore whether there might be a more appropriate place for a small, luxury RV park within the city limits — preferably near downtown, the beaches or other city sights.

The idea is purely in the brainstorming stage now. But Dunedin planning and development director Greg Rice said he’s confident the visitors that such an amenity might bring could help generate profits for the city and area businesses.

LAVA HOT SPRINGS, IDAHO — Members of the Bannock County Deputy Sheriff’s Association have found themselves learning the ropes of operating the Mountain View Campground, located on the eastern end of the city along the Portneuf River.

The campground was deeded to the organization last October by locals, Glenn and Mary Perkins.

The association members have chosen a new campground name to recognize their benefactor, Mary Perkins. “It was known as Mountain View, but everybody in town called it Mary’s Place,” said Detective Tony Manu, president of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

The deputies will reinvest much of the revenue they earn into campground improvements. The rest of the profits will go to support charitable causes, including bringing back a defunct program for troubled youths called Sheriff’s Camp.

The campground has 77 full hookups and is intended for RV camping. It’s fully paid off, and the donation also included an A-frame cabin that serves as the main office and all the necessary groundskeeping equipment. The largest sites can be booked for $45 per night.

“We think it’s going to generate some great revenue,” said Detective Manu.

The deputies will host a retreat for association members this weekend at the campground and plan to open the RV campground to the public on the weekend before Memorial Day.

The RV community spoke and the City of Lake City listened.

Signs posted at Walmart that announced “No RV Camping or Sleeping Enforced,” were removed Feb. 3.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” said City Manager Wendell Johnson.

Previously a flood of letters and e-mails were sent to the Lake City Reporter, as well as Johnson, opposing the enforcement. A letter was sent to Lake City Walmart District Manager Michael Brown that morning stating, “You are in no way obligated to have these signs posted and may remove them at your convenience.”
