Road trips to see this land of ours are a great American tradition.

For those who may hesitate, Marion and Rose Millender can attest from experience it’s always worth the ride.

The Iowa Park, TX, couple, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this summer, have traveled to 48 states by motor home.

A jet seemed more practical for Hawaii, and they cruised from Portland, Ore., to Alaska.

“We started out in 1990 with a little Winnebago, going out on weekends,” said Rose, chuckling about their RV maiden voyage. “We only kept it for a year and moved up to a 32-foot. That’s when we took off for three months.”

The pair are now on their fifth motor home, a 40-foot Diplomat comfortably appointed for a couple in what Rose calls their “upper 70s.” It’s kept stocked and fueled, so they can leave with an hour’s notice, and has some weather-appropriate clothes.

The Millenders say they embraced the RV lifestyle with relish.

“We love meeting new people and seeing things, new scenery,” said Rose. “Now we have friends all over the world.”
