ST. JOSEPH, Missouri – Beacon RV Park is usually a hot spot for summer travelers coming through St. Joseph. This year has been different because of tornadoes and the threat of flooding.

However, the rising Missouri River is now creating new long-term business.

The Charlotte and Michael Chapman just moved in recently after buying their first RV. They moved their belongings out of their Lewis and Clark Village home two weeks ago.

Charlotte Chapman says they plan to live in their RV through the duration of the flooding plus during the time it takes to clean up their home. The Chapmans are expecting waters to rise about three and half feet in the lower level of their home.

Four other displaced families have set up camp at Beacon RV Park too. Park owner Glenn Gibson said he is expecting four more soon and expects more long-term residents to trickle in as the waters rise.

So far, he’s received displaced flood victims from Elwood, South St. Joseph and Lewis and Clark Village.

South Sioux City, Nebraska – Scenic Park directors enforced an evacuation that had campers vacate sites closest to the rising Missouri River.

Campers had to pick up and move all of their belongings to the opposite end of the park and will remain there until further notice.

Park directors are continuing to move folks in the name of safety and say it could be a while before campers are free to move back to their original campsites.

Campers say river levels have been going up and down for the past two months, but they’ve never seen it get this high this fast.
