ZANESVILLE OHIO — Relaxing in a comfortable folding chair under the shaded coolness of a camper awning, Marilyn Reigle enjoyed catching up with friends and taking in new sights and experiences.

“I’ve never been in Zanesville before,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the tours and good entertainment. It’s a relaxing time, and a way to get away from home.”

Marilyn and her husband, Marvin Reigle, made the jaunt from Beaverdam (near Lima) to Zanesville this week because they didn’t want to miss a few days of fellowship and fun.

They joined hundreds of like-minded RVers at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds for the annual Ohio Spring Samboree, organized by the Ohio Good Sam Club.

The Good Sam Club began more than 40 years ago with the goal of making RVing safe and enjoyable. Membership allows participants to share in benefits such as discounts at campgrounds, recreational vehicle stores, car rentals and emergency roadside service.

The official event dates are today through Sunday, but many decided to make it a week-long affair.
With uncertain economic times, fluctuating gas prices and other issues, participation numbers are down slightly this year. Wagonmaster Tom Nutter said 300 to 400 campers is the norm, but Spragg said preregistration for this first Samboree of the year was about 289.

The Iron Horse RV Resort in Elko, Nevada has been recognized by several organizations within the industry as being one of the best. Now the Travel Channel has jumped on board and recognized the park as the best in Nevada, said Ruben Abeyta, general manager of Hilton Garden Inn and the RV resort.

“It got recognized and we’re very proud of that,” Abeyta said.

The RV resort will be featured on the Travel Channel’s “The Official Best of Nevada,” which features several attractions throughout the state. The show airs at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The segment will also rerun throughout the month.

The resort was built in 2007. Abeyta said the construction of a modern RV park had been in the works for the past 10 years.

In order to offer a quality place to stay, he said they are continuously adding new amenities to not only draw people into the city, but to have them stay for an extended period of time.

“We want to bring in a diverse group of people that will enjoy the community of Elko for what it has to offer,” Abeyta said. “We’re trying to create a destination-type resort so people will stay more than one or two days, but three weeks at a time or longer.”

Iron Horse RV Resort was also ranked by Trailer Life Magazine in the top 3 percentile of more than 12,000 RV parks, and was named one of the top 100 RV resorts, out of 1,650 parks nationwide, by the Good Sam Club, according to the park’s website.

When Paul Pinard first decided to join the Good Sam Club he was interested in their discounts for camping with his recreation vehicle (RV). But as he looked further into the Club, he discovered that they have a lot to offer RV owners. After being a member for so many years now he’s been rewarded with a lifetime membership, Pinard and a group of Sam Club members have created a local branch of the club for the Boundary, British Columbia region.

Since the Kettle River covers the region, Pinard’s group decided on the name Kettle River Ramblers. Their first meeting was on held Nov. 26, 2009. They organized their rules and bylaws and got the chapter going. Then they invited all Good Sam members in the area to get together on Jan. 24. Sixteen rigs, mostly from Midway and Grand Forks, come out for that meeting. “We’re hoping that people from Greenwood, Rock Creek will join as we grow and get better known,” said Pinard. Their goal is to bring the group up to 30 members.

On Mar. 7 the club had a planning meeting to discuss options for activities for the year. Chapters get together to design an annual plan for members for camping and attending different events. The plan can include short and long trips to different areas, and opportunities to attend the larger Samborees across the continent. There’s no obligation to attend the events, and no minimum number for the trip to be a go either.
