Galveston Texas — After rebounding from nearly $6 million in damage from Hurricane Ike, Dellanera RV Park has reopened.

The West End RV park reopened to beach visitors on June 18, just in time to welcome tourists for the Fourth of July weekend.

Dellanera Park, FM 3005 at 7 Mile Road, opened in the 1980s with 84 camp sites. Erosion and Hurricane Ike chewed away at the beach, reducing the number of camp sites to about 65. Repairs to the park, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, started about eight months ago.

The park offers spaces for pull- through campers between 50 to 60 feet, slips for 30- and 40-foot campers and also dry camping, which means no available water or other amenities. Day parking is also available at the park.

Amenities include umbrella and chair rentals, picnic sites, showers and, eventually, wireless Internet.

GALVESTON TX — The Park Board of Trustees voted to keep rates at Dellanera RV Park at 2007’s prices in preparation for the spring opening of the West End RV park.

The park shuttered after Hurricane Ike struck the island more than two years ago. Lou Muller, executive director of the board, said the park should reopen in April.

Reservations, however, will not be accepted until June.

Dellanera opened in the 1980s with 84 camp sites. Erosion and the storm chewed away at the beach, reducing the number of camp sites to about 65.

All of the RV sites will have water, electricity and sewer hookups. There will be 21 spaces for “pull thru” campers between 50 to 60 feet at a rate of $42 in the summer and $37 in the winter.

Plans are moving forward for an RV park at Seawolf Park in Galveston Texas, a project estimated to cost nearly $2 million.

The Park Board of Trustees has approved $120,000 from Federal Emergency Management Agency public works funds to pay for an architectural company’s engineering and administration fees to get the project started.

In a budget update to the park board, Randall-Porterfield Architects estimated the RV campground will cost $1.89 million and include 44 RV spaces.

Within the next six months, the park board, which manages and promotes some of the city’s tourism industry, will be ready to accept bids on construction, Lou Muller, executive director of the park board, said.

The RV park will be developed on about 4 acres left of the entrance to the park and west of the parking lot at Seawolf Park, a popular fishing spot and home to naval exhibits such as the USS Cavalla.

“While Dellanera RV Park is very popular because of its location right on the beach, the Park Board of Trustees and staff feel that an RV park at Seawolf will be equally, if not more, popular because of the additional recreational opportunities it will offer,” Muller said.

The board expects to break ground on the campground in the spring and complete work in February 2012.
