INDIO, Calif.— It’s not the standard Christmas set-up, but put on some Perry Como or Mannheim Steamroller and plug in the icicle lights, and even the plainest aluminum camper takes on a holiday sheen.

Snowbirds throughout the Coachella Valley are decking the dashboard of the Tiffin and trimming the hitches of the Airstream. They’re roasting prime rib and honey-baked hams in convection microwaves.

And on the big day, they’ll be Skyping with the grandkids in Missouri and Pennsylvania.

The RV community is by definition a nomadic one, but that doesn’t mean that Christmas traditions get left behind along with the heavy furniture and the permanent address. But there is definitely some scaling back that comes with the cruising lifestyle.

Largo, Florida – A water main break Christmas Eve afternoon in Largo left portions of southern Pinellas County with low water pressure and hundreds of residents living immediately around the ruptured line with no water at all.

Crews are working to fix the 48-inch water main but say it could be several more days before water service resumes for residents and businesses in the affected area.

“It’s Christmas! People need to cook, people need to clean,” said Cheryl Harvey, a resident of Lee’s Travel RV Park less than 100 yards from where the underground rupture occurred.

“Needless to say, we’re not cooking much. We can’t make much. We’d really like to be clean.”

The Harveys say one of the worst parts about losing water is not being able to shower. They’ve filled their outside garbage can with water, which they carry inside in buckets to flush the toilet.

There are about 100 residents in the RV park all living with no water, which is not expected to return until at least Monday. Crews are working to replace a large section of pipe before water can be restored.

Along with the RV park and a second residential community, around 50 neighboring businesses are also impacted.
