A fallen tree was fortunate occurrence for Donald Jenkins.

Jenkins was in his recreational vehicle June 29 at when the severe storms hit Muskingum County. The wind had his RV rocking before a tree fell on its roof and kept it on the ground, the Zanesville Times Recorder reported.

“I was laying on the floor, getting ready for it to tip over when the tree fell on it and kept it down,” Jenkins said. “I’ve been on a lot of thrill rides in my life and survived Vietnam, but this scared me.”

The tree crushed the back section of the roof over the bedroom, and a branch came through a vent near the front of the RV.

Jenkins said he was thankful other campers came to his aid. “I had two guys who I didn’t know come to see how I was and made sure I got out,” he said. “It could have been worse, but we can replace these things.”

Genny and Ron Zwahlen own the campground and live in a house on the property. Ron warned the campers about the approaching storm, and Genny recalled hearing the wind rushing through the trees.

“We’ve seen a lot of storms over the years, and I don’t remember anyone suffering property damage,” Genny said. “We offered (the Jenkins) a place to stay, but Donald wanted to stay in the camper.

“It was a blessing other people were near to help. I know they were grateful,” she said.
