Village trustees have decided to clamp down on unsightly off-street parking and storage of recreational vehicles and utility haul trailers in residential neighborhoods.

The action was adopted Monday night after months of controversy at public hearings ranging from proposing outright RV storage bans to permitting RV owners to do whatever they please while the property is on their residential lots.

Most of the problems seemed to center on the older eastside of the village where lots are larger and life is more casual. Subdivision homeowner restrictions on the west side make RV ownership and storage problems on the smaller lots less likely, village planners said.

Trustee Greg Garner said he toured the east side of town “and found a bunch of problems.”

Many of the trustees who had taken their own tours around Gurnee earlier to check out the situation agreed. They indicated the village has been lax in updating its codes and enforcement practices encouraging the haphazard storing and parking of RVs, boats and haul trailers.

The two ordinances adopted Monday night are effective immediately. One requires a registration program be established to register multiple recreational vehicles and haul trailers within the village. The other addresses a variety of problems with off-street parking, and storage of RVs and haul trailers.
