FORT COLLINS CO — With Larimer County’s opening of Hermit Park near Estes Park earlier this year, people aren’t the only ones camping out.

“We have a lot of bears at Hermit Park, a lot of black bears, and they’ll take advantage of an open cooler,” Natural Resources director Gary Buffington told the Board of County Commissioners Tuesday.

To help minimize the number of wildlife and human interactions at county parks — such as Hermit, Carter Lake and Horsetooth Reservoir — the commissioners plan to pass two new parks regulations at a future meeting.

The first will require that campers and other park visitors store food, beverages, toiletries, trash and anything else that would attract animals in a hard-sided vehicle or solid, nonpliable camping unit such as a motor home or camper.
