BRISTOL, Tenn. — The camping tribes congregate around a coliseum of concrete and steel. They each have their own language and proudly fly the colors of their battalion — either in the air or painted on the side.

The main event is a week away, but to them, this family reunion needs a week to sort itself out.

“You have to get here a week ahead of time to get caught up with all your friends,” said Doug Pittman of Spruce Pine, N.C. “We have friends we see at Bristol Motor Speedway every spring and summer. Some, this is the only time we’ll see them. They are family to us.”

Pittman and several others prepped their campsites for the days ahead on Saturday as traffic began to pick up along Volunteer Parkway near and around the speedway in advance of Race Week 2010.
