Leaving the bustle of Highway 101 seventeen miles west of Santa Barbara California, ducking under the Union Pacific trestle, motorists burrow through a canopy of coast live oaks and sycamores along El Capitan Creek to emerge in a different, quieter world.

While the park’s 128 campsites are invariably crammed full in summer, autumn is a different story. On a recent visit only three campsites occupied.
