The recent discovery of emerald ash borer (EAB) in a St. Paul neighborhood means that people should no longer pack firewood when making summer camping plans.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Mark Holsten on May 20 issued a revised order dealing with use of firewood on state land.
Under the new order, only firewood purchased at a state park or from a DNR-approved vendor may be brought onto state land. Otherwise, kiln-dried, untreated lumber that is free of any metal or foreign substances can be used as firewood.
The receipt supplied by the approved vendor should be retained as proof of purchase.
Unapproved firewood brought to a state-administered campground will be confiscated and the transporter is subject to a $100 fine.
People camping on state forest lands outside of a designated campground may gather dead wood on the ground for campfire use on site. In state parks and designated campgrounds in state forests, people are prohibited from scavenging dead wood.

SANTA CLAUS, Ind. — News out of northern Indiana’s RV factory belt may be disastrous, but Southern Indiana’s largest privately-owned RV park is enjoying good times.

There are at least two reasons why the campground — which started small in 1958 but now spreads across 160 acres adjacent to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari theme park — is bucking the recession.
Lovell said many vacationing families are staying closer to home this year because of the economy.

Denali 115-Piece Basic Tool Kit
>Central Maine Morning Sentinel – Augusta,ME,USA
A few years ago while traveling through North Carolina, I stopped at a campground off Interstate 95 just to stay overnight. It wanted $16 for just electricity. About three miles before, I had seen a motel that was advertising two double beds for $21. I told the campground people that I would not pay over $10.
They didn’t seem to care about getting my business so I went down the road for about two miles and parked in a garage yard. He didn’t want to take any money but I insisted he take at least $5. He believed that an RV in his yard would prevent burglaries and welcomed me back any time.
I have very descriptive words for anybody who would waste their legislative duties on such a bill as LD 114, but I am sure the paper would not publish them.
