HOBART IN — E-mails from recreational vehicle drivers upset over Hobart’s plan to ban overnight parking at local shopping centers have been pouring into the mayor’s office.
Mayor Brian Snedecor has received dozens of electronic messages from across the country protesting a proposed city ordinance that would prohibit truck drivers and RV owners from using retail parking lots along U.S. 30 as night time rest stops. Violations could result in fines up to $2,500.
The ordinance, which won preliminary City Council approval last month, will come up for a final council vote Wednesday.
Word of the pending ban spread quickly on Internet sites that cater to recreational vehicle drivers.
“I’m an RVer myself,” the mayor said. “But the council is not trying to punish anyone. They’re just saying the place where RV and truck drivers stop to sleep shouldn’t be our retail areas. There are other areas for that,” Snedecor said.
Councilman Jerry Herzog sought the overnight parking ban after getting complaints from residents about the growing number of 18-wheelers that park outside Wal-Mart at night. He said RVs recently have started to set up camp in the store parking lot.
Herzog and other council members claim overnight parking contributes to unsafe conditions and may be a hazard to the public’s health and safety.
