Many private campgrounds and RV resorts from eastern Texas to the northern areas of Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia can readily accommodate people who have evacuated their homes as Hurricane Gustav advances toward the Gulf Coast, according to campground industry officials.

Brian Schaeffer, executive director and CEO of the Texas Association of Campground Owners urges Gulf Coast evacuees to log on to TexasCampgrounds.com and GoCampingAmerica.com to make their campground reservations or to gather the phone numbers of campgrounds and RV resorts where they can wait out the storm.

Texas alone has nearly 400 private campgrounds, many of which also offer cabin rentals.

Local lodging facilities are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Gustav in preparation of history repeating itself.

Recreational Vehicle facilities and state campgrounds allow some leeway when it comes to temporary shelter for storm evacuees.

RV campgrounds from Marksville to Pollock are nearly booked to capacity, but a few of the sites will allow additional parking if necessary.

“We’ve rented everything except our bedrooms,” said Mary Sonnier, owner of Rolling Hills RV Park and Resort in Pollock and Marson’s Landing in Boyce.

Sonnier said she and her crew have fielded an estimated 400 phone calls in the last two days from people looking to evacuate their South Louisiana homes.
