The Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon, which wrapped up its annual conference on Sunday in Haines, Alaska, predicts a drop in the number of potential visitors this summer.

Operators have said the number of cruise ship bookings to Alaska is down, meaning not as many cruise ship passengers may be making road trips into the Yukon.

As well, several Yukon tour companies have reported a drop in bookings as the summer months approach.

With pump prices approaching $1.40 a litre this week in the Yukon, visitors to the territory may have to save some of their travel budgets for gas alone, especially for those who want to explore outside of Whitehorse.

One sector of the Yukon’s tourism industry said it hasn’t felt the pinch from high gas prices: the recreational vehicle rental sector, which rents out RVs to tourists wanting to tour the territory.

A large number of the Yukon’s visitors come from Europe, which has been accustomed to higher gas prices. As a result, at least one Whitehorse RV rental agency reported seeing no drop in reservations.

LEAVENWORTH — The picnic tables, fire rings and tent pads at Johnny Creek Campground were still buried under a few feet of snow in places late last week.

Snow still blankets the entrance to Upper Johnny Creek Campground in the Icicle Valley. The campground is normally open and snow-free by now.

The campground in the Icicle Valley southwest of Leavenworth is normally open for early-season campers by now.

But the prolonged winter has left many recreation sites in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest still blanketed in snow and weeks behind in opening.

Snow, cold temperatures and blustery winds are preventing the snow and ice from melting off campgrounds, roads and trails.

“We haven’t seen weather conditions like this since the 1980s,” said Greg Thayer, manager of developed recreation for the Wenatchee River Ranger District.

Campgrounds that would normally be open at Apple Blossom Festival time are still under snow.

“Some folks want to camp out in the forest so badly that they actually hiked in and shoveled snow out from some of our campsites,” he added.

Berks County, PA – An RV campground, Appalachian Campsites near Shartlesville, beset by sewer problems and soil contamination will remain closed this year, according to several campers and the campground’s Web site.

The Web site provided no details but direct people to a sister site, Spring Gulch Resort Campground near New Holland, Lancaster County.

Regular campers at the 86-acre Appalachian Campsites off Interstate 78 said they received letters explaining that the facility closed because of on-site sewer problems.

The campsite is owned by Equity Lifestyle Properties, Chicago.
