ORANGE TOWNSHIP — Area residents should have a new place to enjoy the great outdoors come spring.
Last fall, the Planning Commission rezoned 200 acres on the east side on M-66, near Bennett Road, from agricultural to recreational to make way for Bud Montgomery’s proposal for the county’s largest privately owned campground.
The partially wooded campground, named Alice Springs in memory of Montgomery’s late wife, is undergoing the first phase of construction with installation of roads and water and sewer lines. A 6.5-acre lake and swimming pool is also in the works, as is an 8,000-square-foot recreation building that will feature an office, camp store and laundry.
When completed over the next few years, Alice Springs will feature 719 sites for recreational vehicles and tents. Future plans call for shuffleboard, volleyball and tennis courts and, possibly, a small restaurant.
“Everything’s coming together very nicely,” Montgomery said. “Right now, it looks like we’ll be opening in May or June 2008.”

The result was Indian Mound Campground on Frye Road, a tent and RV campsite equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings with a fishing pond and sand creek nature trail. A new dad with a new business, 24-year-old Allen is now looking to build on an old family tradition to provide a haven for those like himself who feel right at home in their RVs.
